Ronaldo: Roma Begged For Mercy Last Year

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo
has claimed that Roma players were begging him to go easy on them
during last season’s Champions League clash.

The Portuguese wizard was in inspirational form, scoring two goals
and running riot, as the Red Devils humiliatingly thumped Roma 7-1 at
Old Trafford during last year’s quarter-final. The two teams meet again
this evening and Ronaldo has turned up the heat ahead of the game.
"When we were already winning 6-0 one of their players said 'don't
do any more dribbles, you're already winning by six', almost begging,"
Ronaldo revealed, in his new book Moments.
"Obviously I won't reveal his name, as these are comments brought about by occurrences in the game.
"Other players ask me to go to play on the opposite side, and others
don't show any sense of humour when they make threats to my physical
integrity.
"I know that they are merely trying to scare me, but these comments are worthless, for I keep playing exactly the same way."
After a quiet start to the new season, Ronaldo has started to hit
form in recent weeks and he scored the winner at the weekend during the
1-0 win at Birmingham City.

Fergie On Saha: His Time Will Come

Sir Alex Ferguson has explained that patience is the key to getting the best out of striker Louis Saha
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson still believes Louis
Saha has much to offer the Red Devils - even though fans might not see
his best right away.
The French striker has been in and out of the side with injuries for
some time, and United's Champions League win over Sporting Lisbon in
midweek marked only his fourth start of the season. For this reason,
Sir Alex has stressed he won't be expecting too much of Saha too soon.
Tricky Situation
"Louis' last full game before the match at Bolton was last
December," said the United boss. "So you have to take that into
consideration before talking about touch and confidence.
"He needs games, but it's difficult with the situation he is in with
injuries. We have to be careful," continued Sir Alex, "but he felt
great against Sporting and that's encouraging."
Back On The Bench
United travel to Fulham next for a Monday night Premier League game,
and Fergie will demonstrate his step-by-step approach to Saha by
resting him in favour of Rooney and Tevez up front. Saha's star
qualities, he hopes, will be apparent in the second half of the season.

Six held as United fans stabbed

Six Britons have been arrested after fighting broke
out ahead of Manchester United's Champions League tie against Roma in the Italian capital.

Five United fans were stabbed during skirmishes between a group of 50 rival fans on Wednesday evening.

Four of the six Britons detained were formally charged with obstructing police officers in their duty. Two others were released without charge.
None of the stabbed fans suffered serious injuries.

Embassy staff said it appeared there were no further disturbances as fans left the stadium after the game, which finished 1-1.

The violence flared at the Pont Duca d'Aosta bridge, the
scene of many clashes between visiting fans and Roma's Ultras
contingent.
Police used two baton charges to disperse the fans
during the violence, which was the latest in a series of clashes
between supporters of the two clubs.
The last time the two teams met in April, 11 fans were
taken to hospital after supporters were beaten by riot police inside
the stadium. Three United supporters were also stabbed outside the
ground.
Scuffles also broke out outside Old Trafford during the second leg of the tie a week later, with 21 people arrested.

Warnings issued

Greater Manchester Police officers had travelled to Rome
before this latest match and had issued warnings to hooligans not to
attend.
With the two sides having a history of trouble United
manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was disappointed by the scenes in
the city.

"This is something we hoped would not happen," he said.

"We wanted a nice quiet night and to be able to go home with no incident. It is disappointing that has not happened.
"Obviously, we are not sure of the details but we hope the supporters concerned will be okay."

The Great John Street Hotel is the place to be seen if you are anyone who is
anyone in Manchester. It styles itself as an “eclectic town house hotel”,
boasts a roof terrace with south-facing views over the Coronation Street set
and does not mind it being rumoured that Pete Doherty and Mike Tyson shared
a drink in the bar.
There was no other choice of venue for the city’s wealthiest Christmas party –
Monday night’s gathering of the Manchester United squad.
The footballers booked the hotel for their exclusive use, hired security
guards, ordered the WAGs – their wives and girlfriends – to stay away and
partied through the night with 100 invited models and dancers. But the mood
soured at 4.15am when a young woman, clearly in distress, dialled 999 and
reported that she had been raped in the building. It brought a sudden halt
to the party, described by one observer as a “drinking, lap-dancing and
gambling marathon”.
Last night a 19-year-old man was under arrest on suspicion of rape after
voluntarily surrendering himself to police custody to answer questions.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police were swiftly sent to the hotel and
began an investigation that will embroil the world’s biggest football club
in scandal.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the club’s disciplinarian manager, is said to have given
his reluctant blessing to the party, which was organised by the England
international Rio Ferdinand. The player is reported to have boasted of a
whipround in which 25 players contributed £4,000 each.
Police spent much of the day inside the £395-a-night hotel in the Castlefield
area, which remained closed. Police refused to say whether any of the club’s
players had been interviewed but insisted that inquiries were continuing.
The 26-year-old complainant was taken to the specialist sexual assault
referral centre at St Mary’s Hospital, where she was examined by medical
staff trained in counselling victims and preserving evidence that might be
used in a criminal case.
Late yesterday afternoon she gave an initial statement to police before being
allowed to go home and rest. It is understood that she will be questioned in
detail by specialist detectives today. Police are known to have made
informal contact with the club over what has been described as a “very
serious investigation”.
The police will be aware of Home Office research which shows that the
Christmas party season results in a peak of rape allegations and that as
many as 86 per cent of cases fail before reaching trial. United made no
comment on the incident last night, with officials saying that it was a
“police matter”.
But Sir Alex is certain to be alarmed by the allegation. The manager is famous
for keeping his players on a tight leash and prides himself on having purged
the club of its “drinking culture” in the late 1980s and early 1990s with
the help of a network of informers who would keep an eye on players.
Reports earlier this month in advance of the planned party quoted a source
inside the club as saying: “The lads are employing someone to hand-pick
females to attend. There are strict instructions that only the best-looking
girls in Manchester are to be invited.
“Guests will not be permitted to take mobile phones into the party venue. A
team of at least eight security men have been employed to ensure that the
rule is adhered to and that the night runs smoothly and without any unwanted
guests.”
The same Old Trafford source added: “The lads are so high-profile they need to
enjoy themselves in relatively private surroundings.”
“They had such a good time at last year’s party they decided on something
similar this year. The day chosen gives them a week to get ready for their
next game.”
The players’ party – attended by many of the club’s stars, including
Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Gary Neville and Wes
Brown – began with lunch at the Linen Restaurant.
The players were reportedly entertained by burlesque dancers at their tables
as they ran through the £19.50 Christmas menu of home-cured salmon, roast
turkey with apricot and pistachio stuffing and baked white cheesecake.
Later, members of the party were overheard singing football songs at the
nearby Old Grapes pub, off Deansgate, owned by the Coronation Street actress
Liz Dawn.
They made their way to the hotel from the pub but events there occurred behind
strictly closed doors. Guests who were invited were forbidden from bringing
cameras or camera-phones.
Some of the descriptions emerging yesterday from the party will have enraged
Sir Alex and United’s American owners.
One guest told a news agency: “A lot of the players were really letting their
hair down and really enjoying themselves in a big way. Lots of drink was
flowing and there were a lot of girls simply trying to bag a footballer for
the night. It was all very sleazy.”
Another guest said: “Rooney and Rio spent most of the night on the dance floor
– but Ryan Giggs stole the show when he did an Elvis Presley impersonation.”
A police spokeswoman confirmed that the hotel was at the centre of its
investigation.
He said: “Police are currently investigating a report of rape at a hotel in
Manchester city centre. At about 4.15am on Tuesday December 18, 2007, police
were called to the hotel on Great John Street to a report that a 26-year-old
woman had been raped. Inquiries are continuing.”
A spokesman for the hotel said last night: “We did have an event on Monday
night. We are helping the police with an investigation. We are currently
closed.”

Park: We Can Do The Double

Park Ji-Sung has insisted
that Manchester United can win both the Premier League and the
Champions League this season, ahead of tonight’s quarterfinal clash
with Roma

The Korean midfielder impressed in his first Champions League start in
the first leg at Stadio Olimpico, providing the crucial ball that
allowed Wayne Rooney to scramble home from point-blank range and seal a
2-0 win for the Red Devils.

Park also impressed against
Middlesbrough at the weekend, providing a much-needed spark off the
bench as United struggled against a determined Boro outfit in difficult
conditions at the Riverside Stadium. Again he linked with Rooney,
darting smartly into the box from the right and feeding the English
striker, who finished to level the scores at 2-2.

The former PSV
Eindhoven star has been stifled by injury since moving to Manchester
United in 2005, having suffered from a chronic knee injury that
required surgery last April and which kept him out of action until late
December.

Even when fit he has struggled to hold down a starting
place, having to compete with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan
Giggs, Paul Scholes, Anderson and Nani for the attacking midfield roles.

But
‘Three-Lung Park’, as he is affectionately known by the United fans, is
renowned for his work-ethic and team spirit, and has never complained
about his bit-part role under Sir Alex Ferguson.

And he is
confident that the Red Devils can down Roma in the return leg of their
Champions League quarterfinal at Old Trafford, and go on to complete a
European and Premier League double.

"Yes, we can win the double: the European Cup and the league as well," he said.

Park is expected to line up on the bench again for tonight’s clash with the Italian side.

Ronaldo Turns Down Hilton Move

Cristiano Ronaldo has allegedly turned down not Real Madrid or Manchester United, but none other than Paris Hilton!

The Portuguese footballer is currently single after breaking up with
his girlfriend, Spanish top model Nereida Gallardo, according to news
daily 24 Horas.

Ronaldo - currently on a business trip
in Los Angeles - was spotted at voguish Hollywood club Villa, where
celebutante Hilton apparently made a move for him.

"Paris was all over him. The moment he arrived, she went over to his private table," a source told Daily Mail.

"At
one point, she pushed her chest together and made a point of trying to
snuggle up against him. But Ronaldo clearly wasn't interested in Paris.
He turned his back on her.

"Every girl in the club was checking
him out but Paris couldn't take her eyes off him.You could tell he
enjoyed the attention but he didn't really want anything to do with any
of the girls.

"He just sipped vodka soda in the corner of the club with his friends."

Ronaldo is currently recovering from an ankle surgery which will keep him on the sidelines for a period of three months.
